Finding your ideal coach is an intimate adventure. It is a connection about shared vulnerability and deep progress. A subtle shift can be a great deal that can change so much in the quality of our lives. So, choosing the right coach is not as simple as it may seem at first.

A good coach understands you. They respect boundaries and ignite the necessary fire within you. This kickstarts your transformation. I am a personal development coach. Here, I share key points I consider before choosing a coach for myself.

Keys to Finding Your Ideal Coach

In my experience, papers don’t matter. After all, many people have achieved higher academic success but lack practical experience.

Theoretical knowledge is essential. But, I believe those with only theoretical knowledge are at a disadvantage. It is impossible to relate to another person based on theoretical knowledge alone. This is the most significant difference between humans and artificial intelligence at the moment. Training is essential to master the methods. Lived and processed experiences can serve as a significant advantage to connect with people on a deeper level.

Many professionals have lived experience. Their knowledge can be valuable, even if they are only one step ahead of the person seeking help.

It is very important to note that coaches need to respect different competency boundaries.

The coach who mentors crosses professional boundaries. Simply because the key idea in coaching is that the parties are equal, there is no hierarchy. In mentoring a mentor is always on a higher level than the mentored.

I also pay attention to the chemistry between us. Without that, it’s hard to build trust. A free consultation is another important aspect for me. It’s a relatively simple way to find out if there is a rapport between us. Here, I can present my dilemma. Often, it turns out that there is something entirely different under the surface than what is initially revealed. This brief conversation is a good opportunity for the coach to assess whether they can take on the topic the client is presenting.

The coach does not work with traumas. The method itself is not designed for therapy, as it requires a longer duration, and we are referring to a much shorter process. Another difference between the two processes is that, in therapy there is a level of subordination between the therapist and the client. Coaching, however, is based on a partnership. The process remains within this framework for the whole partnership.

It is a misunderstanding to think that the coach tells the client any solution. Advising is a serious breach of competence.

The client knows their dilemma. However, they often need help to see their situation clearly and find the answer. You could say that the client is their own expert. A good coach is well aware of this and works with the coachee on this principle.

The highlights of your  unique coaching experience

Each of us has different needs, so it’s important to be clear about exactly what we want to work on.

The following factors determine authentic coaching.

  • Coaching aims to achieve a specific improvement. The goal is agreed upon at the beginning.
  • The coaching process focuses on achieving change. This change is in alignment with the client’s value system. This way, the client can integrate the improvements into their life.
  • Integration brings us to the key marker of effectiveness. Life updates through coaching should be sustainable. Meaning, the client won’t revert to old beliefs or behaviours even when faced with busy schedules or life’s challenges.

Finding the Right Fit: Your Personal Compass

In summary, this article explored what truly determines successful coaching. I encourage everyone interested in working with a coach to look at these key traits in a coach:

  • Wisdom
  • Competency
  • Rapport
  • Clarity

Ultimately, choosing the right coach depends on your personal preference. If you have already started working with one, you can trust everything is on the right track when you notice shifts in your thinking. Even small shifts in your belief system can lead to big improvements in your life.
