How to Become More Resilient
Navigating The Unexpected
As we progress in life and discover new paths, we may need to recalibrate at times. The flow of life is cyclical. Once we worked our way through one challenge, there will be many more.
All is well, as long as we are mostly moving forward.
As many people, such as Carl Rogers, have pointed out, it is the journey that teaches us about our destination. So, while we enjoy the process, maybe we could also practice some mindfulness.
Acceptance
Non-judgement
Non- reaction.
How I see it, the key to become resilient is to accept on a deeper level where we are. Then, not only our behaviours change, but our brain also undergoes changes.
Mindfulness practices increase the activity in the frontal lobe. Our frontal lobe fosters empathy. Compassion and empathy are important in becoming resilient. When we practice non-judgement and non- reaction, we learn to become more compassionate. And, we also learn to show compassion and empathy towards ourselves.
Many people believe that their thoughts and feelings are inseparable. Our stories can be overwhelming; and they can cause a lot of suffering. They can lead to hurtful behaviours. This causes even more suffering for others and ourselves.
It might be helpful to know that we are not our stories. We are separate from them. To manage these painful thoughts and stories, we can question whether they are true or not.
Through accepting of our reality, we are practicing mindfulness. We don’t need to change anything. We just pay attention to what emerges in our outer and inner world.
Practicing mindfulness and self-compassion can bring us closer to clarity and resilience. This paves the path to positive changes.
What practical steps can you take to apply mindfulness and self-compassion in your own life when facing challenges in life?
Thanks for reading.
